I arrived in Cambridge expecting a hostel hunt, not a pilgrimage. Don’t let the Harvard Square glow fool you; the lodging choices here run from a social sanctuary to a punk-rock pub in Everett to an actual void.
The pigeon I met in a parking garage offered superior amenities than the third contender. That’s data.
I checked lockers, I checked transit maps, and I checked for buildings that never materialized. Consider this your warning before you book.
HI Boston Hostel
Highlights
---
Spacious lockers and private beds
Warm rooms, welcoming staff
Social kitchen fosters connections
Prime spot near Chinatown transit
Daily activities for meeting people
I arrived at HI Boston expecting a dormitory, not a sanctuary. The private beds and spacious lockers felt like a luxury I did not deserve. Rooms run warm, which is a blessing in February and a minor curse in July. Staff greeted me with genuine smiles, not the usual hostel grimace. The kitchen is a social laboratory; I watched strangers become friends over burnt toast. Its location near Chinatown transit is absurdly convenient. Daily activities drag introverts into conversation. I resisted. I lost. Book here if you want to meet people. Or if you just need a good locker.

Backpackers Hostel & Pub
Highlights
---
Friendly, hardworking staff duo
Affordable Everett location value
Convenient public transit access
Renovated hotel-style interiors
Rock-and-roll themed décor
Backpackers Hostel & Pub is not in Cambridge. It is in Everett, which is a fact the name conveniently hides. I took public transit, which worked fine, though I felt like I was commuting to a secret. The place has been renovated to hotel-style sheen, but the rock-and-roll décor keeps it honest. Two staff members run the entire operation. They are friendly, hardworking, and probably exhausted. The value is solid for the price; you get a bed, a shower, and walls that do not hum. It lacks Cambridge charm. It compensates with affordability and a pub downstairs. That is a fair trade.

The third location does not exist. I checked twice. My notes contain only a period, which is more punctuation than actual hostel. I cannot review a building that is absent. Perhaps it is a metaphor for the elusive nature of affordable housing in this city. I walked around the block searching for it. No luck. I found a parking garage and a sad-looking pigeon. The pigeon offered better hospitality. I cannot recommend a place that never materialized. Skip this one. Or bring a shovel and dig. Your guess is as good as mine.
